We’ve listed down 10 of the most epic climbs that you can check out across the country ~ with trails ranging from beginner-friendly and sweat-free to extreme and exhilarating. 

⛰️ MT. APO

Mt. Apo is one of the most challenging mountains to trek in the Philippines; rising at 2,956 meters above sea level and located near Davao City.

It is considered as one of the country’s pride. With its challenging trails, you need ample preparation, determination, and, most importantly, much energy, as the journey to the peak might take 10 hours or 2-3 days. 

The crater contains the crystal blue waters of Lake Venado. Prepare for steep trails, mossy wetlands, jagged rocks, cliffs, dense trees, and volcanic formations.

The four main paths to trek up Mount Apo are:

1. Kidapawan Trail (North Route)

   – Starting Point: Ilomavis, Kidapawan City, North Cotabato

2. Kapatagan Trail (South Route)

Mt. Pinatubo is located in the province of Zambales. To reach the peak, take a 45-minute trip in a 4×4 to the mountain’s base and prepare for a two-hour trek. You’ll travel past volcanic rocks, streams, cliffs, lush woodland, and traces of the eruption as you walk the trail. Mt. Pinatubo’s once-ruined background is now serene. There are four trails to choose from to get to Mount Pinatubo, as shared by Summit.com.

  • The Crow Valley Trail is the most popular of four, as it can be completed within a day. It starts at Santa Juliana, Capas, Tarlac, where you begin the journey with an hour drive using a 4×4 drive going to the base of Mount Pinatubo. From there you will hike about 5.5km (3.4 mi) for about two hours up to the rim of the crater lake

During the wet season, 4×4 cars cannot travel as far, requiring a 10-kilometer (6.2-mile) trip each way. Although the hike takes longer, it can still be done within a day.

  • The Riverbed Trail is the second trail. The 4×4 vehicles drive up the dry riverbed, taking at most 30 minutes. However, this route is only accessible during the summer, when the riverbed is dry.
  • For the adventurous traveler, the third and fourth routes to Mount Pinatubo promise an unforgettable journey through the Porac Pampanga trail and San Marcelino trail. Both trails span two to three days, providing ample time to immerse yourself in the breathtaking beauty and rugged terrain of this iconic volcano. Pack your gear and get ready for an epic trek!

⛰️ MT. PULAG

Travel to Benguet to see the tallest peak in Luzon and the third-highest mountain in the country, Mt. Pulag. 

This mountain is 2,922 meters above sea level, and reaching the peak would take about 4-5 hours. Bring your heaviest gear out of the closet since the temperature in the mountain might drop below -2 degrees. 

These are the trails going to Mt. Pulag: 

  • The Ambangeg Trail is the most accessible and famous of Mt. Pulag’s four routes. This trail spans approximately 8 kilometers and is often favored for its relatively moderate difficulty, making it accessible to both seasoned trekkers and beginners. This trail winds through a lush landscape of mossy forests, where ancient trees draped in moss create an ethereal atmosphere. However, it would help to be cautious because it is still an active volcano. Check with the Department of Tourism Office and PHIVOLCS first. It’s a challenging hike that will take 2-3 days to complete. Because of the volcano’s activity, the authorities have prohibited access to the top. On the plus side, you may still trek till Camp 2, which takes 2-3 hours.

⛰️ MT. DARAITAN

  1. Traditional Trail

Starting Point: Barangay Daraitan

The Traditional Trail is more direct and challenging, featuring tougher climbs with steeper sections, making it favored by experienced hikers seeking a rigorous trek. Starting in the village, the hike quickly ascends into the forest. The trail is steep and can become quite muddy, especially after rain, necessitating proper footwear. Along the way, hikers will encounter dense vegetation, narrow paths, and occasional rock scrambling.

⛰️ MT. ULAP

Mt. Ulap, located in Itogon, Benguet, is a popular hiking destination due to its scenic views and relatively easy climb. Standing at 1,846 meters above sea level, the mountain is part of the Cordillera range and is known for its rolling grasslands and picturesque rock formations.

Whether you’re a seasoned trekker or just starting out, Mt. Ulap is a mountain that promises a rewarding and unforgettable adventure. Here are the trails you can take:

  1. Ampucao-Sta. Fe Ridge Trail

Starting Point: Barangay Ampucao, Itogon, Benguet

This trail is well known for its gorgeous landscape and enthralling ridge views. Hikers will travel over breathtaking mountains, pine forests, and rolling meadows. The well-marked trail is moderately strenuous and appropriate for hikers of all skill levels. The trip, which begins in Barangay Ampucao, climbs to panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys after following a well-marked path through pine trees. Hikers can visit famous sites like Ambanao Paoay Peak and Gungal Rock along the route, and there are plenty of rest areas and view decks that provide great photo possibilities. 

The trail ends with a moderate climb up to the peak, where hikers are rewarded with breath-taking vistas in all directions. Depending on your pace and the amount of breaks you make, the full trail should take you four to six hours to complete.

  1. Ambanao Paoay-Gungal Ridge Trail

Starting Point: Barangay Sta. Fe, Itogon, Benguet

The last climb to the summit is difficult and steep, requiring perseverance and physical fitness. When hikers reach the summit, they are rewarded with breathtaking views of the Cordillera mountain range and the rolling hills below.

⛰️ OSMEÑA PEAK

Osmeña Peak, at 1,013 meters above sea level, is the highest point in Cebu and a popular hiking destination due to its stunning views and relatively easy climb. The peak is part of the Mantalongon mountain range and is known for its jagged hills that resemble the famous Chocolate Hills of Bohol.

There’s essentially only one main trail leading to Osmeña Peak. It’s a relatively short and straightforward path that’s perfect for hikers of all levels. The trail gradually ascends, making it easy to navigate. The path is well-defined and easy to follow that passes through forested areas with vibrant vegetation. As you climb higher, the scenery opens up to breathtaking vistas. Some sections of the trail are rocky, so proper footwear is recommended. The entire hike to the summit typically takes around 30 minutes, making it a quick and rewarding adventure.

Difficulty: Easy. The hike to the summit takes about 1-2 hours, making it ideal for beginners.

The Olango Trail is considered extremely challenging, often surpassing the difficulty of the Tampayan Trail due to its exposure and technical nature. This trail is part of the reverse traverse and is designed for experienced mountaineers seeking a demanding adventure.
